Mixed Media, Hybrid Expressionism
From The Resurrection in Light Series
By Ryan Keeley
Resilience of a Dream emerges from Ryan Keeley’s Resurrection in Light series as a meditation on endurance, transformation, and renewal. Created in the aftermath of the Malibu wildfires and informed by Keeley’s time working within the Tadao Ando–designed Malibu residence, the painting reflects both physical and emotional reconstruction. Layers of pigment, raw texture, and embedded materials evoke a surface shaped by time and pressure—where destruction becomes a catalyst for reinvention rather than an end.
Working in a hybrid expressionist language, Keeley merges gestural abstraction with material symbolism. Elements of sand and ash, integrated into the surface, serve as both literal remnants of place and metaphors for rebirth, echoing the philosophy of kintsugi, where fractures are not concealed but honored as part of an object’s history. Light emerges through the composition in fractured passages, suggesting resilience not as permanence, but as the continual act of rebuilding.
Within the broader Resurrection in Light series, Resilience of a Dream stands as a pivotal work—marking the moment where personal renewal, architectural restoration, and the collective healing of Malibu converge. The painting proposes that dreams do not survive through perfection, but through persistence; that what endures is not untouched beauty, but the courage to begin again.
